Must-Try Foods to Eat In Greece

IMG_8861.jpg

Greece is known for its beauty, its history, and its FOOD. We tried so many new things on our trip, as well as dishes we had tried here in the states. Everything we tried, whether it was something new or something we had before, just tasted so much better in Greece. We still dream of the flavor of their olive oil and cuts of lamb on a pita!
I encourage you to take advantage of the delicious Greek food while you are there. Make sure to try new things along the way as well as compare familiar dishes with ones you have ate in the past. Here are my "must-try" top recommends for dishes to eat while in Greece! ENJOY!

1. 2 Gyros

First and foremost, you have to try the Greek gyros (at least two, three or maybe six times.) Almost any restaurant will sell these, but my favorite spots were the street gyros where you can buy them for about 2€ a piece. It was by far the easiest, tastiest, cheapest, and quickest option for lunch. I'm pretty sure we had at least one of these every day of our trip! Some were definitely better than others - so make sure you order them right by saying you want "souvlaki on a pita" *Local pro tip!*

This may end up being what you get if you don't say "on a pita." Still tasty, but not as fluffy and delicious as a pita wrap! PS - these fries served with a tiny fork were BOMB.

2. Tzatziki and pita

Pictured below in the upper lefthand corner is a delicious, creamy greek yogurt dish called Tzatziki. You can order this with bread or pita on the side which makes for a perfect appetizer to share! Zach and I always ordered this when we ordered our drinks before our meal. It's hard to go wrong with Tzatziki at any restaurant in Greece, so order up!!

3. Yemista (Stuffed peppers & tomatoes)

This dish was recommended to us by two separate locals, so we just knew we had to give it a try! Yemista is a dish of stuffed peppers and tomatoes. They fill the peppers with a tomato based sauce, rice, corn and other yummy ingredients then bake it to perfection! I tried this at a dinner in Mykonos and it didn't disappoint! So tasty and easy to make once you're back home too!

4. Greek Salad

Guys... Order the Greek salad in GREECE. It. Is. Life-changing. The salad was our go-to dish for almost every dinner to share before our main course. The tomatoes are seriously some of the freshest I've ever had and I can't even begin to describe the fresh feta cheese. There is no lettuce involved with this salad, but instead features fresh tomatoes, red onion, peppers, cucumbers, local olives and olive oil. This is a MUST while in Greece!

5.  The Seafood

I am not a huge fan of seafood. I normally don't try anything new, especially if it comes out of the ocean. However, the group I was with in Mykonos all loved seafood. They were always ordering octopus, squid, fish, or something else that looked a little fishy. After enough pressure, I caved in and gave the octopus a try. To my surprise, it was pretty good! The fish in Greece is always fresh, straight out of the sea. Most everything is caught in the morning and served that same day. Even if you aren't a seafood person, I encourage you to give it a try!

6.  Breakfast foods

Some of my other favorite dishes were ones I ate for breakfast. The eggs were super fresh, the OJ was sweet, and the crepes were amazing. Make sure to try something new each day and get up early enough to make it to a restaurant in time for breakfast!
