5 Treats to Try in Greece

IMG_8852.jpg

Treat yo'self. If this isn't your life motto on a daily basis (like it is for me haha!), it should be while you're on vacation at the very least! Today, I'm sharing with you my top 5 treats to try while in Greece!

1. Gelato

If you love ice cream, gelato, frozen yogurt or anything in the freezer section at the grocery store for that matter - do yourself a favor and try the Greek gelato! It was so delicious, smooth and there are no shortage of flavors! This was our go-to dessert after we had dinner. YUM!

2. Affogatos and Greek espresso

Speaking of gelato, make sure one of your visits to the local gelato shop includes ordering an affogato. This is a delicious scoop of gelato topped with two shots of Greek espresso. Both of my favorites in ONE! Haha! Another option for a tasty treat is ordering some yummy espresso after dinner too! Their coffee was some of the best I've ever had and is available almost everywhere! Make sure to give both a try!

3. Frappes or cappuccino freddos

When I saw the word "Frappe" on the menu, a picture of a Starbucks frappuccino instantly came to mind. Greek frappes, however, are almost nothing like that at all. They are basically a foamy, iced latte and are oh so good! We fell in love with this drink and ordered it whenever we were getting our morning coffee. Another delicious option we found was the cappuccino freddos (iced cappuccinos.) Both have the option to be sweetened or unsweetened - I'd recommend trying sweetened first and if its too sweet, going without next time. Some baristas sweeten more heavily than others!

4. Greek pastries

The Greek bakeries are a little overwhelming at first. Picture a jewelry store with pastries in the glass cases instead of jewels. Most of them are pretty large due to the vast amount of options they have. Seating is usually slim to none because most people grab their pastries, sandwiches or breads to go. I'd recommend visiting a bakery a few times on your trip. Order a breakfast pastry one day, come back for a sandwich or flatbread for lunch the next. Their dough and breads are to die for! My favorite was the chocolate croissants!

5. Tiny treats

Little tiny ice creams are a popular option in the Greek markets. Zach and I found our favorite tiny treats at a little market by our hotel in Santorini! They offered little ice creams in a variety of flavors, and were a perfect little cold treat as we were walking back to our room in the heat! Plus they are super cute!
